Thanks to the modding community, there’s never a dull moment in Skyrim, like when someone tinkers with the vanilla experience so much and all of Whiterun’s guards inexplicably end up with high-pitched voices. One of the things that kept Bethesda RPGs alive for so long in 2011 was that The Elder Scrolls V encouraged multiple ways to play. While newcomers to the game are often overwhelmed by what they’re seeing and doing, veterans are still finding new things to this day.
Thanks to the plethora of mods that have come out over the past 11 years, the standard experience has been vastly improved, adding more life to an already outdated version. It’s even possible to modify Skyrim so much that it looks almost real. With so many options to choose from, and more on the way, fans are left with a mess of TES5, but sometimes that can have detrimental effects, if it’s fun.
Take Reddit user maryjanepurplerain, for example. In a recent post, they mentioned how they spent three days “retouching and tinkering” with Skyrim to get it the way they wanted. Unfortunately, this has the side effect that all the guards in Whiterun City now have voices that make them sound like Minions, those annoying yellow creatures that were once the subject of many Facebook memes. While the game itself looks great with all the mods, it’s pretty fun to hear the guards, and only the guards, utter their well-known phrases in a high-pitched voice. Fortunately, maryjanepurplerain was able to identify the problem, but it did highlight that modding can sometimes go wrong.
Anyone who’s played the game knows that Skyrim’s Whiterun guards can do weird things, usually as a result of some unexpected glitch. In a way, they became the stars of the show, especially not long after the game’s release. Most notably, the guard often said “I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee”, a phrase that was adopted by many and became a legend in its own right The words are correct.
As mentioned above, Skyrim has a lot of fun mods for anyone looking to alter the vanilla version. While a lot of it is on PC, there’s also a lot available for download on console versions, but maryjanepurplerain’s recent experience reminds us not to overdo it with too much.
