Sony has provided the latest system update for the PlayStation 5, bringing the console to version 23.01-07.20.00. This is a routine update with no particular focus, at least as Sony has publicly acknowledged, but it should bring some interesting improvements to the PS5 experience. The PlayStation 5 is now more than two and a half years old, and it continues to be updated regularly to improve the console experience.
The last major update for the PlayStation 5 was version 23.01-07.00.00, released in early March. The update adds several new features to the PS5, including full Discord voice chat, voice commands for saving video clips, transferring data between PS5s, and 1440p improvements. Since then, updates have focused on minor bug fixes in the 23.01-07.00.00 update, including a fix for Discord that was causing disconnects and display issues in the PS5 game library.
However, the latest PS5 update doesn’t focus on previous patches. It’s a step forward for the console as a whole, though it’s more focused on general improvements than any specific improvements. System software version 23.01-07.20.00 for the PS5 brings three improvements. First, Sony has “improved system software performance and stability,” which should mean the PS5’s operating system will run smoother and have fewer chances of crashing or making errors. PS5 owners may never notice the change, but hopefully it means it’s working.
Two other changes in build 23.01-07.20.00 focus on different topics. The second change is that Sony has “improved information and usability on certain screens,” but it’s not clear which screens and which information. These adjustments can be so small that users won’t notice them. Finally, the third change in the latest PS5 system update upgrades the DualSense Edge wireless controller to “improve stability.” It’s unclear exactly what changes have been made, but the DualSense Edge has had some compatibility issues in the past with PC games in particular.
While the new PS5 system update might not be anything substantial, it’s still great to see Sony continue to roll out these improvements on a regular basis. Bigger updates are more exciting because they add new PS5 features, but it’s the regular PS5 updates that round out the console experience and make it a better place to play. Today’s PS5 is better than yesterday’s.
It’s unclear when the next major system update for the PS5 will be released, or what features it might include. Now that the PS5 has been around for several years, big updates are likely to become more irregular. In addition, the PlayStation 5 Pro console is likely to be released in the near future, which will become Sony’s new focus. Expect to hear more about future PS5 updates later this year.
