Many horror fans are eagerly anticipating Bloober Team’s reimagining of the iconic Silent Hill 2, but there’s been chatter in the community that the developer might be using the patented tech it saw on The Medium. Over the past few years, there have been a ton of successful video game remakes, especially in the horror genre. Can’t say if there will be fatigue and if players will get tired of seeing old games come back, but for now, there are more remakes to look forward to.
No one is quite sure when Bloober Team will release its modern take on Silent Hill 2, but given that the developer has reportedly been working on it since 2019, it’s expected to be this year. However, this is just speculation at this stage. Also, for better or worse, more speculation has been brewing lately about whether or not the remake will use a particular mechanic.
Twitter user bobvids expressed their thoughts on the upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2, suggesting that the game may feature the studio’s dual reality technology, which first appeared on The Medium. The reaction comes after visual artist and content creator Rino released a checklist of all the things that could make the upcoming remake a success. One entry in the listing said Konami was “amazed” by Bloober’s game concept, leading bobvids to speculate that it might have something to do with the studio’s dual reality technology. The fact that they point out that the minimum specs for PCs seem to be “ridiculously high,” almost matching The Medium’s requirements, seems to back this up.
For those who don’t know, the 2021 horror game The Medium has a unique dual reality mechanic that allows the screen to split into two simultaneous worlds at different points in the story. The player’s actions are mimicked in the mental realm, and the game requires the protagonist to use this dual reality system to solve puzzles. It should be noted that whether silent hill 2 will also have this function has not been confirmed, but in bobvids’ twitter reply comment some people have shared their views, daven_skilnyk hinted that it may be used to show other people’s real situation figure.
In addition to the SH2 remake, the Bloober team is also working on a new Layer of Fear, which will be released sometime in 2023. The studio is clearly busy, but many are concerned about whether the developer can modernize and successfully bring back one of the most influential survival horror games of all time.
Silent Hill 2 is currently in development for PC and PS5.
