Resident Evil 4 Mod Switches Leon for RE3’s Nemesis

For those wanting a change from playing Leon Kennedy, a mod for the recent remake of Resident Evil 4 lets fans slip into the metaphorical shoes of Nemesis, one of the series’ most iconic tyrants. With the Bloober Team remake of Silent Hill 2 expected to launch soon, not to mention the Dead Space remake that launched earlier this year, horror games are in the midst of returning to the genre’s golden age.

One of the notable things about Capcom’s ongoing franchise is the onslaught of powerful enemies that have tested players’ mettle over the years. Resident Evil is known for its formidable roster of enemies, from the T-002 tyrant mutant that appeared in the original game in 1996 to the unforgettable Matriarch of the village, Mrs. Dimitrescu, in 2021. Of course, fans will have their favourites, but there’s one that’s always on the back of someone’s mind, and it’s now possible to play him in the RE4 remake.

On Nexus Mods, user Dimenarius made it possible for Resident Evil 4 players to take on the role of Nemesis, specifically him in the RE3 remake. The mod replaces Leon Kennedy with Tyrant’s character model, making the antagonist the hero of the story rather than the villain. However, the description does not say whether Dimenarius’ mod preserves Leon’s original dialogue. It’s obviously a bit of a shock to see this monster free Ashley Graham from Lord Sadler’s clutches, but the great thing about mods is that they allow players to experience the game in new and exciting ways.

Resident Evil 4 modders have been busy since the remake came out not too long ago. There are already plenty of ways to modify the vanilla format on PC, whether it’s extending the open village sequence, replacing Leon with a more classic RE look, or improving the visuals and overall experience. It will be interesting to see if others insert different playable tyrants into RE4.

It’s no secret that Resident Evil had a huge impact on horror games, influencing many other games and studios since, including Silent Hill. With the success of the recent remake, and a ninth installment said to be in development, things are continuing to find a way for the franchise that helped define survival horror in its early days.

Resident Evil 4 is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
