Redfall Player Count Could Be More Bad News for the Game

According to SteamDB, Redfall’s Steam concurrent player count hit an all-time peak of 6,124 at launch, with just 4,028 playing in the past 24 hours and 2,377 at the time of writing. Redfall is the latest game from Arkane and Bethesda, a co-op shooter in which players explore the titular town of Redfall, collect loot, and slay vampires. Unfortunately, Redfall didn’t live up to expectations.

Reviews for Redfall so far have been mostly negative, with users reporting various issues with the co-op shooter. Redfall’s many issues seem to have put many players off trying the game, if its Steam concurrent player numbers are any indication.

While shooters are incredibly popular on Steam, and games are often the most popular titles around launch, Redfall’s highest concurrent player count to date is just 6,124. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that Steam isn’t everything when it comes to Redfall’s player numbers. Redfall is also available on Xbox consoles and is effectively a once-a-day Xbox Game Pass game. Redfall’s being on Game Pass means most people playing on PC will be able to check it out via it rather than Steam, but the game’s Steam player numbers are still worrisome.

Forza Horizon 5 has a peak player count of over 81,000 on Steam, while Halo Infinite has over 272,000, but there’s no denying its multiplayer advantage is free. Hi-Fi Rush, the critically acclaimed new action game from Tango Gameworks, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim, and so far has also surpassed Redfall’s highest concurrent player count on Steam, albeit just barely. Arkane’s previous title, Deathloop, peaked at 20,094 concurrent players, but it did have the benefit of not launching as a day-one Game Pass title. Atomic Heart, a Game Pass title and new IP from an unconfirmed studio, has more than 38,000 concurrent players. The numbers suggest that even when games are on Xbox Game Pass, they can still pull in big numbers on Steam, but Redfall has failed to do that.

The negativity surrounding Redfall isn’t doing it any favors, but there’s always a chance the game will make a comeback. There are a lot of games that are released in a bad state, only to be turned around with updates and DLC. The Redfall update will hopefully fix many of the game’s technical issues and general performance issues, and in turn bring more players on board, but fans will have to wait and see.

Currently, Redfall’s reviews on Steam are mostly negative. It’s entirely possible that it could end up bouncing back like other games have done over the years, but Arkane definitely has a steep hill to climb.

Redfall is out now on PC and Xbox Series X.
