While many consider the Disney Plus series Obi-Wan Kenobi to be a dividing point in the Star Wars saga, it’s hard to deny the excitement of seeing Ewan McGregor reprise his role as the titular Jedi. But despite the show’s seemingly dry finale, many are still wondering if it will get another season.
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Star Wars story is fairly self-contained, including an adventure across the planet that ultimately allows Obi-Wan to better understand himself and the Force. There doesn’t seem to be much left to say about the ending, especially considering further developments have already been covered in other entries like Star Wars Rebels. Still, McGregor seems confident that Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 can still happen. But what does the show’s director think about the idea?
Deborah Chow, who directed all 6 episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, recently appeared on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast and talked about her experience working on the show. However, she also responded to the oft-asked question of whether she thinks it will (or should) have a second season with a fairly straightforward answer. “It’s a limited series; it’s closed,” Chow replied. Her review seems to definitively end the book on these issues, at least for now. But there’s always more to Star Wars. “It’s still 10 years away from A New Hope,” she added, as if throwing a bone at fans, “so never say never.”
From the frustrating experience as an Obi-Wan Kenobi writer to the complications of filming at the height of COVID, the series has had its share of setbacks. It was intense,” Chow said of the COVID restrictions that threatened to shut down production. “Fortunately, that seemed to be one of the aspects that went according to plan, because they managed not to get shut down for these things.
As for not having a second season, it makes sense that there are no plans, since Obi-Wan Kenobi was originally supposed to be a movie. A tighter storyline featuring Obi-Wan’s disillusionment with the Force in the years following The Clone Wars is the right size for the movie. Things worked out nicely when he accepted responsibility for his former apprentice, Anakin, who became the intimidating Darth Vader despite Obi-Wan’s best efforts. It also reunites fans’ long-awaited McGregor and Hayden Christensen as Obi-Wan and Anakin, which is certainly worth a watch.
Of course, there’s always room for more stories to be told. After all, this is Star Wars. They could create an entire series around a character sneezing in the background of a single scene. Heck, this is the franchise that made the aquarist in Jedi: Survivor a fan favorite. One thing’s for sure, there will be more to Obi-Wan Kenobi someday. But fans shouldn’t hold their breath.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is available to stream on Disney Plus.
