New Horror Game Has Serious Old-School Resident Evil, Silent Hill Vibes

Tartarus Key is a new horror game coming to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on May 31st, seemingly inspired by classic PS1-era Resident Evil and Silent Hill games . Needless to say, fans of the classic survival horror game will want to keep Tartarus Key on their radar as the end of May release date looms.

The Tartarus Key tells the story of Alex Young who finds himself trapped in “a strange mansion full of puzzles, traps and cameras”. It’s instantly reminiscent of the original Resident Evil game, which was famous for a mansion full of puzzles and traps. What sets Hellkey apart from Resident Evil and Silent Hill, though, is that it uses a first-person perspective, rather than a third-person and fixed point of view.

Tartarus Key gameplay was fully revealed in the game’s release date announcement trailer, showing horror fans the unsettling game world, creepy soundtrack, and tricky puzzles. Brave enough players will have to explore the ominous mansion on Tartarus Key from a first-person perspective. In this way, it’s almost a cross between modern Resident Evil games (like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village) and the graphics of the original Resident Evil games on the PS1.

Tartarus Key uses a PlayStation 1-inspired art style, which goes a long way in cementing itself as a game inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill. This art style is great for creating a sense of dread in players, and it’s arguably more effective than realistic graphics. Ultimately, horror game fans will have to try The Tartarus Key for themselves to see how it works, and with a release date set for later this month, the good news is the wait won’t be too long.

Tartarus Key isn’t the only new horror game inspired by the classic Resident Evil game that launched in May. On May 4, those with a VR headset handy will be able to try out Propagation: Paradise Hotel, a VR horror game that also looks directly inspired by the classic Resident Evil-style game.

There are other new horror games to look forward to in May 2023, and Amnesia: The Bunker offers fans of the genre something brand new when it launches on May 23. Amnesia: The Bunker is the latest installment in the popular Amnesia horror series, and while it has some familiar gameplay, it will also make a big difference by introducing a semi-open world and letting players actually fight back against monsters.

Tartarus Key will launch on May 31 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
