Mortal Kombat 12 received its first trailer. The long-term success of the Mortal Kombat franchise meant that a new game in the world-renowned fighting game franchise was inevitable. However, the question remains whether NetherRealm’s next game will be a new Mortal Kombat game, Injustice 3, or something else entirely.
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boone narrowed it down on Twitter, confirming that NetherRealm’s next game will be either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3. Some time later, Warner Bros. found out that an executive from the company had revealed the matter, confirming that Mortal Kombat 12 was in development. Mortal Kombat fans are still waiting for the full Mortal Kombat 12 reveal, but rumors suggest it could happen sometime later this month.
While Mortal Kombat fans were still waiting for the full news, they’ve seen a brief but entertaining trailer. At the end of the video thanking fans for their support of Mortal Kombat over the past 30 years, fans can see what appears to be an hourglass. The camera then zooms in and focuses on a grain of sand, and it explodes. This left some fans scratching their heads, but it’s likely a nod to the events of the Mortal Kombat 11 story.
The rest of this article will have SPOILIERS of Mortal Kombat 11 and its aftermath expansion
Mortal Kombat 11’s story is all about Kronika, the Keeper of Time, and how she manipulates time after the death of her son Shinnok. Kronika is able to do this using her hourglass artifact, though by the end of Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath expansion, Kronika is long gone. The Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion ends with one of two endings in : Either Shang Tsung or Liu Kang takes control of the hourglass and uses it to create a “new era” – essentially a whole new timeline.
Based on this trailer, it seems likely that Mortal Kombat 12 will follow up the events of Mortal Kombat 11:’s Aftermath expansion, though what that means is unclear. Maybe it’ll move forward with a whole new timeline, essentially rebooting the story, or maybe it’ll follow one of the expansion’s endings and make it canon. Whatever the case may be, fans should learn more when Mortal Kombat 12 is officially revealed.
