According to new rumors, Sega may release a new Sonic the Hedgehog game in 2024, along with new titles in the Jet Set, Comix Zone, and Guardian Heroes series. Sega regularly releases new Sonic the Hedgehog games, but the main series of platformers took a hiatus after 2017’s Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces.

In contrast, 3D platformer Sonic Forces received mixed reviews. While new Sonic-related media and games are constantly being released between 2017 and 2022, there won’t be a new main series 2D or 3D platformer until 2022’s Sonic Frontier. The open-world Sonic the Hedgehog game received mixed reviews from critics, but it certainly has its own fans, and it was even nominated for a 2022 Game Awards.
The next game from Sonic the Hedgehog is Sonic Superstars, a 4-player co-op 2D platformer. So far, previews of Sonic Superstar have been largely positive, but time will tell if it lives up to fan expectations. Meanwhile, a new Sonic game appears to be releasing sometime in 2024. That’s according to leaker Me Too, who recently leaked some interesting Sega news. They didn’t share details on what the new Sonic the Hedgehog game would look like, but they did add that Jet Set, Comix Zone, and Guardian Heroes will all be represented in some capacity in 2024.
Assuming the leaked information is correct, one has to wonder what kind of Sonic game Sega will be releasing in 2024. It’s possible this will be another 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game, although that seems a bit fast, what about Sonic Superstars? Available October. More likely, it’s some kind of Sonic spin-off, or a direct sequel to Sonic Frontier. Ultimately, Sonic fans will just have to wait and see if the rumors are true, while keeping their expectations in check.
The same leak also revealed some details about the future plans of Sega subsidiary Atlus. If the leaked information is true, Persona 6 is in development but won’t be releasing in 2024 as some previously thought. Atlus is also said to be developing a Persona party game, but the leaker did not reveal further details about the project.
