A new report reveals that The Hogwarts Legacy substantially exceeded sales expectations at launch. Hogwarts Legacy officially comes out in February 2023, though it’s only available on PC and current-gen systems.
Hogwarts Legacy was originally scheduled to launch on PS4 and Xbox One in April, but the previous-gen version was pushed back to May. Additionally, it’s scheduled to launch on the Nintendo Switch later this year, which will make Hogwarts Legacy available on a variety of modern gaming platforms. Despite only launching on current-gen systems and PC, Hogwarts Legacy appears to be selling well above expectations.
As reported by Insider Gaming, initially spotted by Twitter user Timur222, sales of Hogwarts Legacy were 256% higher than WB Games’ internal forecast. This information comes from the LinkedIn profile of Warner Bros. Entertainment’s Senior Global Brand Manager, confirming that this number comes from the game’s release. Hogwarts Legacy sold more than 12 million copies in its first two weeks, generating more than $850 million in revenue during that time.
Hogwarts Legacy continues to top various sales charts, adding a respectable amount to that total over the past few months. Within a month of launch, Hogwarts Legacy outsold Elden Ring’s lifetime sales in the UK, both games considering physical and digital sales. Elden Ring was a huge hit for FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment, so it’s impressive that Hogwarts Legacy outsold its lifetime sales in such a short period of time.
It will be interesting to see Hogwarts Legacy’s latest sales whenever WB Games decides to share more information about its market performance. The Hogwarts Legacy team shared some interesting stats on player engagement, confirming that fans have spent 406 million hours playing the game, defeating a staggering 2.25 billion Dark wizards in the process. This information was originally revealed on March 10, 2023, so these numbers should have increased significantly since then.
Hogwarts Legacy will be launching on more platforms soon, which will undoubtedly increase its total. However, most cross-gen titles appear to sell higher on PS5 and Xbox Series X compared to previous-gen titles, so it will be interesting to see if a game’s release on PS4 and Xbox One has an impact. The Switch version is also likely to be a hit, though fans can already experience the Hogwarts legacy on the go via the Steam Deck.
Hogwarts Legacy is out now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, with PS4 and Xbox One releases on May 5 and a Switch port on July 25.
