While bugs and glitches can lead to some interesting moments in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, one player had a strange encounter with the dreaded Headless Horseman, seeing him separated from the horse he left behind. Skyrim players documented the strange appearance on video and posted it on social media for other gamers to discuss and share their own stories about the Ghost Rider.
Under normal circumstances, Skyrim players might not see the Headless Horseman at all for a few hours. However, players who dare to seek him out have a few ways to do so. During the day, the Headless Horseman can be found in a Nordic tomb called Hamvir’s Rest located in the Whiterun area. The Horseman will rest there, but the Dragonborn will have to fight some draugr and skeletons to get to him. As night falls, the Headless Horseman and his horse can be seen making their way along the Path of Skyrim to Hamwell’s Tomb. Considering that the knight can appear on any path in Skyrim, it might take some time for players to find him.
However, a Skyrim player named Br0wnieDraws on Reddit stated that they encountered the Horseman and saw them chasing his horse. In a video that lasted more than a minute, the player was riding a horse towards home when he suddenly saw the Ghost Horse of the Headless Horseman galloping on the road, but the Headless Horseman was not on it, but a few steps behind chase. The OP then pursues the Headless Horseman and the horse, but the steed is a few paces ahead of them and widens the gap with every gallop of their monstrous hooves. Although the Horseman is generally harmless to Skyrim players who encounter him, the Horseman ignores everyone around him while chasing his horse.
The video was posted to the r/skyrim subreddit and received over 1.2k upvotes in less than a day. Some Skyrim players joked about the Headless Horseman, while others shared stories of encounters with the ghost and his mount. The OP stated in the comments that the mod they used gave their followers a horse that they wouldn’t lose as easily as Horseman, but they didn’t comment on whether the mod was somehow causing this interesting but harmless glitch to happen or not.
Still, while Skyrim players may have a hard time finding the Headless Horseman, those who do find him rarely encounter boring encounters. Whether he’ll make a cameo in a future Bethesda game remains to be seen.
